2011 NFCT Interns
We would like to cordially introduce you to the 2011 NFCT Interns!
Stewardship Interns
After casting a wide net into a very deep pool we have been very fortunate to pull together a great group of 8 Stewardship Interns, lead once again by Noah Pollock NFCT Field Coordinator. This year our stewardship intern program has support from the Northern Border Regional Commission, the Davis Conservation Fund, the Adirondack Watershed Alliance, and support from the NFCT membership through our Trail Fund.
Every season is different and this one is no exception. Our field programs continue to grow and change. This year we will continue to have a Roving Crew that will be supported by our Field Coordinator, Noah Pollock. We will also have a two-person Allagash Crew spending seven weeks in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and a two-person GIS crew that will be collecting spatial information and installing sign-in boxes along the trail. Both the Roving and Allagash Crews will be offering the opportunity for volunteers to participate in Waterway Work Trips. We are very fortuate to again have a Program Intern that will be wearing many hats as they support our field efforts and accomplish work that will benefit our members.
Here's a brief glimpse of the people who will give it their all from Old Forge to Fort Kent this season:
Noah Pollock: Field Coordinator

Noah hails from Delmar, NY, and graduated from Cornell University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources. In 2007, he earned a Master's degree from the Rubenstein School for Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont, where he studied sustainable community development and ecological economics. His thesis examined the economic impact of paddler tourism and recreation along the waterways that make up the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.Since earning his degree, Noah has continued his work with the NFCT, first as an intern, and then as the NFCT Field Coordinator, assisting with intern and waterway work trip programs, building on his experience leading trail crews with the Student Conservation Association. When not on the NFCT, Noah works on projects for the Vermont River Conservancy, the consulting firm Spring Hill Solutions, the Gund Institute of Ecological Economics, and the Wild Rockies Field Institute.
Roving Crew
Anna Cady

Anna Cady is a life-long outdoors enthusiast. She has been backpacking with her parents in the high sierras many times, a few hours from her native Davis, CA. These early trips shaped her interest in conservation and love of adventure. She recently graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in Environmental Science, focusing on water resources. She spends all available free time white water kayaking and teaching others how to kayak. When indoors, she enjoys playing guitar, knitting, and baking.
James Blakely

James fell in love with New England in 2008 on a road trip out to Maine after graduating with a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Idaho. For the past year, James has been living the life of a gypsy in the Northwest. He is super excited to be returning to New England where he hopes to settle down for a few years to pursue a career in the environmental non-profit sector working as a community organizer and activist. He is passionate about wolverines, mitigating climate change, and sustainability and enjoys slacklining, hiking, biking and other outdoor activities.
James Naughton

James is currently a college junior at Southern Illinois University studying Forestry with a focus in parks and recreation. He graduated Lincoln-Way Central High School in 2003 and traveled to Easthampton Massachusetts where he attended The New England School of Architectural Woodworking. Upon completion he traveled to Honolulu, HI to work as a cabinetmaker/carpenter for one year. After completing his stay in Hawaii he traveled back home to work in a cabinetry shop until 2008. After working for years as a carpenter/cabinet maker, he decided to receive his degree and pursue a career in the field of forestry.
Allagash Interns
Nicole Grohoski

Nicole grew up in Ellsworth, Maine and first paddled the Allagash while in college -- it was love at first sight. She now lives in Winooski, Vermont where she volunteers with the city fire department and works on local water quality issues (such as nutrient pollution in the Missisquoi River). Amongst many adventures, becoming the first woman to through-paddle the NFCT stands out as a favorite. She is thrilled to be spending the summer in Northern Maine and working for the canoe trail!
Peter Gerard

Peter grew up in Madawaska, ME in the St. John Valley, about twenty miles from the end of the NFCT! He recently graduated from UMaine Orono, with a B.S. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Peter is an avid paddler, fly-fisherman, hunter and guitarist. He enjoys spending free time playing music and exploring waterways / woods with friends. Peter plans to eventually teach high school science and guide canoe trips in Maine. He is always looking forward to the next adventure!
GIS Interns
Brendan Jackson

This will be Brendan's second summer with the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. After a season as a Stewardship Intern with the NFCT during the summer of 2010, he is excited to return as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern. Brendan is a 2008 graduate of Paul Smith's College in upstate New York, from which he received a bachelor's degree in Forestry with a concentration in Recreation Resource Management. His previous employment experiences include two seasons as a Wilderness Instructor for Adirondack Leadership Expeditions, a wilderness therapy program in the Adirondack Park, and two seasons as an Assistant Forest Ranger with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the West Canada Lakes
Wilderness Area (also in the Adirondacks). He is looking forward to the 2011 season with the NFCT.
Max Reis

Max Reis is originally from Buffalo, NY. He is a junior at the University of Vermont pursuing a major in forestry with a minor in geospatial technologies. He has also worked the past 5 summers as a counselor/guide at a boy's canoe tripping camp in Algonquin Park, Ontario called Camp Pathfinder. With Pathfinder, I have been on countless canoe trips ranging from flat water tours of the Algonquin Park to backcountry expeditions down the rivers that flow into James Bay. I am extremely excited to once again be discovering a new landscape via paddle power with new friends.
