NFCT Waterway Work Trips


Going on an NFCT Waterway Work Trip (WWT) is a terrific way to get involved! These weekend outings offer hands-on trail maintenance along the scenic Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Spencer Lake 2010 WWT Group, by NFCTCamping is arranged near work sites, and time always built in to paddle.

Work trips have a $60 member/$75 nonmember fee per person to help cover food and project related expenses. Meals include Friday dinner, all Saturday meals, and Sunday breakfast. Paddlers bring their own camping and paddling gear. We can help connect you to an outfitter if you need to rent any equipment.

New York: Deerland Carry, July 15-17

This project is a collaborative effort between NFCT, the Raquette River Corridor Project, and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. The Deerland Carry is located south of Long Lake at Buttermilk Falls (NFCT Map 1). Along with enjoying the Raquette River, work trip goals are to:

  • Install a seven-step stone staircase at the put-in
  • Improve bridging along the carry

Vermont: Davis Park River Access, July 22-24

Located in Richford, Vermont, this project will continue work accomplishedButtermilk Falls 2010 WWT Group, by NFCT last year by the Northwoods Stewardship Center and the community of Richford (NFCT Map 5). Along with paddling the Missisquoi River, work trip goals are to:

  • Construct a 200-foot stone causeway trail
  • Install a primitive campsite
  • Install a kiosk

New Hampshire: Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, August 12-14

Located along the New Hampshire and Maine border, we will improve the shores of the Magalloway River (NFCT Map 7 or 8). We'll enjoy the wildlife refuge and paddle the Magalloway River and Umbagog Lake. Work trip goals are to:

  • Rehabilitate a site where old cabins have been removed
  • Lay wood chips on the Magalloway River Trail

Maine: Gull Pond Portage Trail, July 29-31

We will continue work installing a portage trail connecting Haley Pond and the Rangeley Logging Festival 2010Rangeley Lakes Region Logging Museum, in Rangeley, Maine (NFCT Map 8). This project is scheduled for the same weekend as the museum's annual Logging Festival and is sure to be a lot of fun! Along with enjoying the waters of the Rangeley area, work trip goals are to:

  • Install 150 feet of bog bridging
  • Perform minor trail tread work

Maine: Allagash Wilderness Waterway-Tramway Carry
July 15-17 and July 22-24
(register for one or both)

Working with the Maine Bureau of Public Lands, we will improve the historic Tramway Carry, located between Chamberlain and Eagle lakes (NFCT Map 12). Along with paddling the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, work trip goals are to:

  • Build 1,000 feet of stone causeway
  • Improve trail tread
