Dear fellow paddlers and NFCT enthusiasts,

Many youth today are suffering from a disorder for which there is but one cure, and that cure is nature. Children today spend more time in front of television screens and computers than they do in their own backyards. Irrational parental fears, diminishing natural areas, and the prevalence of electronic entertainment have all dramatically reduced the amount of time our youth are spending outdoors.

Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD) is affecting more and more of the next generation with consequences that are only now starting to become clear. Children who aren’t exposed to natural environments may be more likely to develop behavioral and learning problems such as ADD/ADHD, and are also more likely to be obese. While NDD has negative effects on our youth, it also has negative effects on the environment. Children who don’t spend time in nature become disconnected from the environment and may not feel the need to protect it.

To help raise awareness surrounding this issue my brother Liam and I plan to canoe the 350-mile Maine portion of the NFCT this July in an effort to raise $10,000 for the Northern Forest Explorers; the program founded and run by the NFCT that connects rural youth to the natural wonders practically in their backyards. Please help us reach our goal by pledging your support today by visiting This money will allow the Northern Forest Explorers to impact the lives of 30 children by connecting them to the natural wonders in their own backyards, giving them an experience they will never forget while strengthening their connection to nature. We have already raised $3,300 dollars and are partnering with Old Town Canoes and Kayaks. Can you help us reach our goal?

    Ben and Liam Malakoff
