Going into the summer as an NFCT intern, I expected to gain skills in stewardship and trail maintenance and spend the summer adventuring. However, I had no idea what to expect of the Allagash and went in ready to work hard and play hard in a location that is the trip of a lifetime for some people.
As we started the season, we all bonded quickly over shared experiences, humor, good cooking and learning from each other’s skills. It was special to feel such support and camaraderie through the good times and hard times. Ethan was a wonderful crew lead, always willing to hear our ideas, give us the chance to lead and be there for us to lean on when we needed it. Nick and Henry always brought optimism and humor, and Evan provided calm stable energy. Being on a strong team allowed me to feel comfortable growing my strength and skills through the struggles that come with learning. It also gave me the confidence to do my first rapids and develop my paddling skills.
My favorite memory from the whole season is probably our 63-mile paddle up the Allagash River. It was the longest paddling trip I had ever done, and while we did get a little fried from the sun, especially after being in the canoes from 8 am to 6 pm one of the days, it was completely worth it! Every section of the river was distinctly beautiful, and getting to observe the wildlife on a calm rippling river was unrivaled. It will remain unforgettable and I am thankful that Nick and Ethan motivated us and believed in our abilities.
It was also amazing getting to work with volunteers this summer. We were so remote that we only had a few small groups come in until we had a large group of about 15. Getting to see what we could achieve so quickly with a large group was amazing, as we put in a new accessible trail in a day and a half. Additionally, getting to get to know everyone and their background was so fun. Everyone brought their skills and experience to the table which was amazing to learn from. It was especially nice having the Maine Appalachian Mountain Club there.
Coming away from this summer, I am proud of all the work we could achieve in the Allagash. I am excited to put my new skills to use in the future in my personal life and conservation work. It was so special to learn about and be a small part of the history of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Being in nature for eight weeks with such an amazing group of people while paddling and learning so many new skills will remain an unforgettable experience for me.
