Adirondack Canoe Trip Will Dip into Local Heritage

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT), a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people to the rivers, lakes, and communities of the Adirondacks and northern New England, is promoting a 5-day, guided paddling trip through Adirondack history. Travel by canoe September 23–28 from Old Forge to Forked Lake, NY camping in style and with a final night at the historic Great Camp Sagamore.

New York guide and oAdirondack Exposure logowner of Adirondack Exposure Scott Locorini and noted historian and author Hallie Bond will share the storied history of the Adirondacks while exploring the Fulton Chain of Lakes and Raquette Lake in an intimate, small group setting. Participants will receive paddling instruction while listening to tales of the area’s past hermits and 19th century moguls.

The trip’s final night will be at Great Camp Sagamore built in 1897 as a retreat for the Vanderbilt family and now a National Historic Landmark. Sagamore’s Director of Programs Jeff Flagg saGreat Camp Sagamore logoys this kind of guided trip is an incredible way to experience the history of the region, “one that both retraces the historical water route to camp that began in the 1890s, and provides a new point of access to Sagamore through its newly-designated Historic Great Camps Special Management Area.”

Kate Williams, Executive Director of Northern Forest Canoe Trail, says the group is excited to endorse this first-of-its-kind trip for the organization that provides a fitting way to experience the history and landscape of the Adirondacks. Williams says, “The time of year, the small group size, the professional guiding and interpretation, and the first-class accommodations make this a very special experience. We are thrilled to be able to endorse this trip and partner with Adirondack Exposure and Great Camp Sagamore.”
