Work & Fun in the Great North Woods

During the summer of 2024 I had the wonderful opportunity to join an NFCT Stewardship Internship Crew based along the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW). The experience allowed me to make incredible friendships, complete meaningful work projects and connect with nature and wildlife on a daily basis.

We spent almost two months restoring eroded banks, maintaining campsites and improving canoe access areas on Churchill Lake, in the heart of the AWW. I’m thankful that we also found plenty of time to enjoy the wildlife and explore the lakes and rivers all around us. My favorite adventure of the summer was a 63-mile journey to the end of the AWW. We paddled for 2.5 days north from Churchill Lake through some of the most beautiful wilderness I’ve ever paddled.

The friendships formed while working, living and adventuring with a small group of folks are unlike any other. I was fortunate to have grown very close to my fellow crew members during long work days, countless jokes and wonderful meals.

This summer has been incredibly fulfilling and rewarding. I would highly recommend the NFCT Stewardship Internship to anyone looking to perform meaningful work in beautiful places, while having tons of fun in the great north woods.
