Black River: Irasburg to Coventry

This 5.5 mile (2+ hour) reach is a wonderful spring run through the farmland and forests of the Northern Green Mountains. Herons, muskrats, and mink frequent the river here. This section features a ½ mile of Class I-II “boulder gardens”, two covered bridges, and two scenic waterfalls. To avoid an arduous portage around Little Falls, take out just above Big Falls, above the USGS gaging station. This reach is best run in moderate to high water (April-May). Look for at least 200 cfs on the USGS gauge in Coventry.
