NOTE: THE RAQUETTE LAKE SPRINT CHALLENGE SCHEDULED FOR JULY 11, 2015 HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
The Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) is hosting the Raquette Lake Sprint Challenge on July 11 in Raquette Lake, New York. The race is a 10-mile course for canoes and kayaks to benefit NFCT’s youth paddling program.
“The Northern Forest Canoe Trail is new to the racing scene, and we are thrilled to have our local Raquette Lake volunteers spearhead the effort to make this event happen,” said Karrie Thomas executive director of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
Race check-in will begin at 8:30am at the boat launch in Raquette Lake Village, and the race start will be at 10am. Classes include solo, pair, family, and 4-person canoe options. Cost: $25 per person. Race registration is online at www.northernforestcanoetrail.org.
Raquette Lake Navigation Company is offering a discounted rate to family and friends of competitors who sign-up for their luncheon cruise on the W.W. Durant, a two decked excursion boat which serves gourmet meals. One can watch the race from the cruise, and 20% of the cost will be donated to the Northern Forest Canoe Trail’s youth program.
The first 147 miles of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail begins in Old Forge, New York and enters Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh. NFCT events in the Adirondacks this summer include Northern Forest Explorer trips for kids ages 10–14, a volunteer service weekend on the Saranac River, and a guided paddled trip on Long Lake.
