WAITSFIELD, Vt. – Brianna Baker of East Barre recently completed a summer internship with the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, Inc. (NFCT) based in Waitsfield.

As a NFCT Stewardship Intern, Baker was part of a crew working on a variety of trail projects, and led weekend Waterway Work Trips in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The projects ranged from erosion prevention to improving waterside campsites, portage trails, and access to launch sites along the 740-mile recreational waterway.

"I had a great summer with the Northern Forest Canoe Trail," said Baker. "Everyone involved with the trail was friendly and enthusiastic, and it was heartening to be embraced into the NFCT community. I enjoyed learning to do trail work, going for paddles, and being surrounded by the beautiful scenery along the trail."

Before beginning her internship, Baker spent three weeks in Honduras doing community development work in the small village of Jaitique.

Baker graduated from Spaulding High School and is now a dean’s list student at the University of Vermont where she will be a junior Civil Engineering major in the fall. Baker is involved in UVM’s Engineers Without Borders, is a leader in the UVM Outing Club and in the Health and Wellness Residential Learning Community.

The NFCT is a canoe and kayak trail connecting lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and portage trails between Old Forge, N.Y. and Fort Kent, Maine. Read about the work done by the 2010 NFCT interns on the Voices From the Trail blog at http://nfct.wordpress.com/.
