Update on 2021 events & activities

Last year at this time, the team at the Northern Forest Canoe Trail announced details about Film Festival dates, Waterway Work Trips, the Missisquoi Paddle-Pedal, Celebrate Paddling month and all of the Adirondack Watershed Alliance events and activities, including the 90-Miler.

And then the COVID-19 pandemic derailed, well, everything.

As the paddling community begins planning for the upcoming season — it will be here before we know it — we wanted to provide a general overview of what we expect for 2021. If you have questions or concerns, please get in touch: [email protected].

We are thrilled to report that we are on track to take ownership of the AWA in March. We will do our best to carry on the traditions and continue to cultivate the remarkable community that has come together around the events that Brian and Grace stewarded and fostered for decades.

All events will follow state guidance on gathering and travel. While we hope to be able to host most outdoor events in person, we are in a holding pattern until we get closer. In an effort to minimize direct contact and maintain the ubiquitous social distance, all events will be online registration only and require pre-registration at least 24 hours in advance.

We will update this post as more details become available!

Film Festivals — March, April & May

At present, the NFCT is not planning any in-person film festivals. We are planning one virtual screening of the Paddling Film Festival, and communicating with our partners about a series of virtual programs featuring paddling adventures, paddling people, paddlecraft and paddling instruction. We will provide updates as things come into focus.

Waterway Work Trips — July & August

Our team was able to successfully host a series of COVID cautious Waterway Work Trips in 2021, and we expect to do the same this coming season. Details on dates, locations and registration are coming soon.

‘Round the Mountain — May 8

Our ability to host this Saranac Lake, NY-based event will be determined by COVID guidance and our ability to secure a permit. NFCT is researching the best way to make it a virtual event in anticipation of the possibility that we are not able to host it in person. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Missisquoi Paddle-Pedal — Aug. 7

Currently, the NFCT is tracking COVID guidelines in Vermont before it makes an official decision on this year’s Paddle-Pedal. We are researching the best way to make it a virtual event in anticipation of the possibility that we are not able to host it in person. We will make a formal announcement when more information is available.

Celebrate Paddling — June

We are currently working with our partners in the Adirondacks to put together a lineup of virtual and in-person events and activities, all of which will carefully follow COVID-19 protocols. Visit celebratepaddlingadk.com for updates and more information.

Adirondack Canoe Classic (90-Miler) — Sept. 10-12

We are cautiously optimistic that the 90-Miler paddling event will take place in 2021. NFCT will take over management of the event in March and, COVID-depending, host the events with AWA support in 2021. Our ability to implement will be determined by state guidance and permitting. If we are able to move forward, online registration will open July 1. To be notified, send an email request to [email protected]. More information will be available soon.

Long Lake Long Boat Regatta — Sept. 26

As with the 90-Miler, we anticipate that conditions will allow us to host this event in 2021. More information is forthcoming.
